Yahoo! UK News Message Boards – Transport – Do we need wider roads?

The arguments for adding lanes (increasing capacity) are economic and environmental. Increased capacity will reduce congestion, improving the reliability of journey times. Reducing congestion will save time and fuel, and lead to decreased vehicle emissions. Reducing congestion on trunk routes will lead to lower transportation costs, benefitting the economy. There will also be an improvement in the quality of life for all road users – hauliers, business and domestic drivers and passengers.

I am convinced that these benefits of adding extra lanes will outweigh the costs, at least economically and socially (less sure environmentally). They are admittedly a medium-term measure not a long-term measure.

However, I would be interested to see the government analysis that has chosen this approach above other possible alternative (or complementary) measures, such as accident reduction (which reduces congestion), additional toll roads (ditto), additional free-to-use roads (e.g. the shelved parallel Manchester-Birmingham route). I am somewhat afraid that we are looking at a cheapskate option here rather than proper investment in our road network. Anyone know whether / where we can read the analysis in question? Without facts and figures I think we're all just in danger of ranting.

Yahoo! UK News Message Boards – Transport – What would be your parking policy?

Why do people have to park outside the front door? or almost inside it.Get out and walk.

Yahoo! UK News Message Boards – Diet – Jamie Oliver and all of those trying to make a difference to School Dinners

		        First of all,
I'd like to point out that I'm not a Jamie Oliver fan. I am also not a fan of the dictatorship that the government rules over the common schoolchild. The effect on my school from dictating tyrants like Jamie Oliver and those in charge of school health, have been devastating. The vending machines have been turned off. I can't get a quick bottle of water if I've already drunk my one packed for the day. The natural energy drinks have been wiped out, I will get tired as soon as I've finished my P.E Lessons, I normally drink a lucozade after one. The most outrageous thing is just not clever at all. Polos. A small pack of those mints that have the holes in the middle. They have banned those and made the only sweets in school, sugar free polo's. I am feeling sick of all this.
Once a week I would have a twix bar and because of the obese people dieing in Britain, I as one of many have been disadvantaged. I do agree that school lunches should be more of a selection and more health but the rules they've enforced has gone from 100% free choice to 0%. I think we should settle somewhere in between. Perhaps all students should carry a card and after they have had a fatty food then it should be swiped on a register. It will then tell the cashier's that they have had x amount of their fatty foods for the week and they have x left. I'm thin, I'm in excellent health AND I weigh 5'4 at 5 foot 7 inches tall. Don't any of you think that this has gone too far. Maybe I should go in television, scream out that I think Jamie Oliver shouldn't be aloud on TV or internet and hopefully he'll disappear. Just like he did to our occasional option

Yahoo! UK News Message Boards – Immigration – Is 100 days enough for Reid?

Home Secretary John Reid has vowed to do “whatever it takes” to make the public feel safe.

In an interview with a national newspaper, he set a deadline of 100 days to sort out the system that failed to deport 1,019 foreign prisoners.

But do you trust Reid in setting such a tight deadline, or is it simply media-friendly talk which will soon be forgotten?

Or maybe it proves that with concerted effort by government, the nation's problems can and are tackled?

Yahoo! UK News Message Boards – Diet – Jamie Oliver and all of those trying to make a difference to School Dinners

Put her back on school dinners …. its perfectly simple, hunger will take her back to school dinners, it doesn't matter how fussy she is. If she is spending her allowance on junk food, stop giving it to her and put it into a bank account instead. No parent should allow their child to hold them to ransom.

Yahoo! UK News Message Boards – Labour party – Banning alcohol on public transport?

Haven't you noticed though, that this is how Labour deal with everything. They identify a small problem, and then stop everyone from being able to potentially cause it.

Shooters, drinkers, smokers, preachers – whether you agree or disagree with any of them, the thing they share, is that everyone is paying the price for the lawbreaking minority.

The way to get people to “respect” each other, is to encourage good practice with the things we can do, not ban everything that might be morally dubious, politically sensitive or un-PC.

It's perfectly possible to use firearms for sport/land management without ever thinking about using them to kill people.

It's perfectly possible to drink without causing violence or public disorder.

It's perfectly possible to enjoy smoking, considerately.

It's perfectly possible to preach your religion, and denounce others without inciting terrorism.

Why then, are we all punished for the foibles of the few?

Yahoo! UK News Message Boards – Smoking Ban – The smoking ban

I have given up smoking (21 Sept.2004) so I do know what pleasure smoking gives people. When going for a meal in a restaurant or pub I cannot stand to smell cig. smoke now, it spoils my enjoyment of my meal, when people smoke they do not stop to think how they blow the smoke out of their mouths it is usually straight at me (well it seems to be). If I ever sat at a table where other people sat, if they were eating and I had finished I always used to ask if they minded if I lit up a cigarette before smoking, but other people on the table never asked. I have always been so annoyed when people smoking walk along the street with their cigarettes at their side catching peoples coats and skirts etc., as they walk passed. As the medical profession and other bodies have spoken out against smoking I do really think SMOKING SHOULD BE BANNED ALTOGETHER, CIGARETTE FACTORIES CLOSED DOWN SO NOBODY WOULD BE ABLE TO KILL THEMSELVES OR ANYONE ELSE IN THEIR PATH.

Where does National Express coach leave from in Brighton?

I'm catching it at Preston Circus, Brighton (towards heathrow). I've read on here it goes from Preston Circus normal bus stop X, but emailed National Express and they said it goes from outside a British Heart Foundation shop near Hare and Hound. Anyone know which it is?

Yahoo! UK News Message Boards – Mobile phones – Does your kid have a mobile?

There's a new report out today which suggests that half of all 10-year-olds own a mobile phone and that by the time they go to secondary school at the age of 12, 90% of kids have tthem.

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/19092006/344/half-10-year-olds-mo biles.html

Obviously most of these phones are bought by the parents for reasons of safety, but the artcile also says that it could also lead to a kind of mobile dependancy:

'More than four out of 10 girls aged 15 to 17 seem to reveal an addiction to their mobiles, saying that they would “feel unwanted if a whole day went by when my mobile phone did not ring”.'

I just wondered if there were any parents here who'd bought their kids phones and what their thoughts on this article were.

Let's call it “Hedonism”, not that it would be particularly.

In the club, we could have a smokers corner, alcohol, chips,
(promise you won't smoke on my chips?), burgers, pasta with pesto and sun dried tomatoes (oil? My goodness I am practically advertising heroin) lard a plenty, bars of chocolate, cake, tea and coffee (I am sure government health officials are passing out everywhere). We would own it like a home, not a club, so stick normal furniture in, they can't tell us what to do with a house surely? There's no law against friends gathering.

I think it's high time for a revolt. From one married mother of two who is just sick to the back teeth of being told what I should and should not be doing, let's club together and buy a place where we can do what on earth we like!!

I know this is just a dream, and a rant, but wouldn't it be nice to be free from the thought police?

If so, then how do you get there? By train, car, walk?

Ski resorts rejoice over abundant snow – Yahoo! News

DENVER – Santa brought just what the nation’s ski resorts wanted – the best nationwide snow conditions in several years.

From New England to California, the snow dumped in the days and weeks before Christmas. Even Taos, N.M. in the desert southwest, had a 60-inch base.

“This is our best opening since 1977,” said Adriana Blake, marketing director for Taos. The resort couldn’t open for Thanksgiving, but later got 68 inches in a week. “This is crazy. It never snows like this.”

In November, with a few exceptions, some of the most popular resorts in the Rockies and California delayed their openings because of a lack of snow. Most only offered limited terrain because of an unusually balmy and dry fall that produced disastrous wildfires.

Then the jet stream moved south and the snow began to fall, and fall, and fall. Wolf Creek, Colo., which usually has the deepest base in the state, has suffered for the last two years. It debuted late last month with less than 10 inches. A week before Christmas it had 115 inches.

“It is spectacular. For the first time in recent time in recent history the industry is up and operating across the country. We looking for record Christmas attendance,” said Michael Berry, president of the National Ski Areas Association.

Sugarbush is close to being 100 percent booked for Christmas, a record for the Vermont resort. It expects to have 100 percent terrain open for Christmas, said J.J. Toland, communications director. Also in Vermont, Mad River Glen, which relies mostly on natural snow, reported 100 percent open.

New England struggled last year. The Vermont Ski Areas Association said 59 percent of Vermont’s 1,242 trails were open as of Dec. 10, compared with 14 percent at the same time last year.

The snow has been good from the start at Whistler-Blackcomb, British Columbia, the busiest resort in North America. “This season we have had cumulative snowfall of over 11 feet and we are forecast to have close to three feet more fall by Christmas,” said Michelle Leroux, spokeswoman for Whistler.

“All of us are thankful that the snow will be here for Christmas. The skiers take note of that. If one region suffers the skies take note of that and tend to generalize that there is no snow,” said Connie Marshall, spokeswoman for Alta, Utah’s legendary powder palace.

Mammoth’s 14-inch base had grown to 45. Squaw Valley, near Lake Tahoe, went from 5 inches to 40.

“It looks like this could be a pretty good white Christmas. It’s just one storm after another,” said Kyle Mozley, a Reno, Nev., National Weather Service meteorologist.

Underneath that snow at Vail, Colo., the nation’s busiest resort, is $1 billion in improvements in lodging, retail facilities and other amenities like ice-skating. “All the streets feel like plazas. East Meadow Drive is so much more inviting — and with the new restaurants and shops, it feels like our own ‘Little Italy,’” said Beth Slifer, chairwoman of Vail’s Local Marketing District Advisory Council.

“With our European street concept we’ve developed a look, a feel and a product that will last 100 years and that encourages shopping, dining and lingering during any season,” said her husband, Rod, Vail’s mayor.

Aspen’s Snowmass resort has added a $17 million, 25,000-square foot children’s center, called the Treehouse Kid’s Adventure Center. It has a dedicated four-seat chair just for the kids. Inside there interactive, environmental-themed rooms like the Butterfly Meadow. It even has rooms for kids who need a little extra care or aren’t feeling well.

Colorado’s Beaver Creek Resort also just opened a new gondola, connecting the resort with the nearby town of Avon with a three-minute ride. The resort also has a new children’s area with customized learning slopes.

Mammoth Mountain, Calif., has replaced a double fixed-grip with the six-pack Cloud Nine Express, which will cut ride time to the Dragon’s Back area in half to six minutes. It will help the busy mountain move snowriders across the mountain more easily, and it is a heavier chair and can operate in more difficult weather conditions, said Laura Johnson, spokeswoman for the resort.

Brighton, Utah, has replaced its last fixed-grip chair, the Millicent, laying claim to becoming the first area in the country in which all terrain is served by high-speed quads. That means more runs, and no longer being banged in the bum by chairs.

New England Business Journals reports that areas in Vermont and New Hampshire spent more than $30 million in improvements. An additional $175-200 million was expended by ski areas and private developers in real estate projects.

		        Hi Kevin

They do get battered, just like us; I’m not sticking up for them.

One young lad bought a car, it was towed away to a compound cost £200.00 to get it out, the tax was out.

He parked behind the shops here, and the police turned up to tow it away again,

I had to intervene and explained he has not had a chance to tax it yet, and they agreed.

Poles are far from stupid, they drive all the way to Poland for expensive repairs which are a lot cheaper there.

Even there kids are better educated?

god help us all.

I'm thinking of moving to Brigton in May. I currently live in Hull (which i hate). Whats brighton like??

Brighton – Expensive? Niceplace to live? Lots of shops etc etc?

Where can I get a fruit smoothie in Brighton?

Hey hey, how's Brighton these days? I bloody miss the place, it's excellent!

Anyway, there used to be a place in the north lanes, forgot what it's called, but it used to be near the big HSBC. They used to make excellent smoothies.

Other than that, Churchill square maybe?

With a gourmet grocery store mere steps away from the flat, I find browsing in the produce aisle almost as interesting as the vintage clothing shops in the North Laines. Since I was last there, the owner has put in cable TV, …

Grey Area: Brighton Sunday

Brighton was cold, wet, windy and full of sullen looking people with no xmas cheer about them. The shops were rubbish and people were looking rather miserable at the crappy clothes, products and decorations. It's an odd contrast to last …

Weekend away in Brighton – Where can I park?!?

Hi everyone,

I'm going to Brighton next weekend for a weekend away, from Friday til Sunday. I'm intending to drive down but I need to know where I can park for free? I won't be using my car at all while i'm down there so it will have to be somewhere that I can park for the whole weekend.
Someone suggested Brighton Marina….and the website says free 24hour parking however I don't know if it's time-limited! Also it would be a big walk from there to where I am staying which is on Grand Junction road!

Does anyone know of any free parking roads around that area? I have also been told of a residential area near Elm Grove where I could park but I don't know if you need a residents permit.

Any information anyone?!
Many thanks, Lauren.
